Stoke City FC Partner Club Feature Part 2 – Peter Crouch

In part two of our Stoke City Partner Club feature, we hear from Stoke City FC & England International striker Peter Crouch, who was part of the Coerver® programme as a young player .

Peter is Stoke City FC’s record signing and has made 515 appearances scoring 162 goals at club level and has made 42 appearances for the England national team scoring 22 goals in a professional career that has spanned 14 years (see below image with Coerver® UK Director, Scott Wright).

Peter said of his time with Coever® “I did Coerver when I was a kid, it was extremely beneficial for me and enjoyable which was the main thing. It was fantastic to help the skills and ability that you need when you are a professional player.”

“The philosophy was that you could always improve your skills, no matter how good you were and the more you practiced the better you became. We enjoyed it so much that at the age of 11, a few of us went on a residential Coerver Coaching course at Uppingham in Rutland and spent a week honing our skills.”

“I think when you are a kid the most important things are technical ability, your first touch, when I was at Coerver every player had a ball and it was all about getting your touch right and improving the basic skills of the game really and the team shape and everything else comes later in life.”

Peter added “Certainly the foundation is what Coerver is based on, in my opinion, it is skills and technique and that’s what you need to play at the highest level”. Did it (Coerver) make me a better player?, all I can say is the ability I have on the ball now is not all down to luck!”

Coerver® UK Director Scott Wright said “It is great that we have such a fantastic role model as Peter here at Stoke to motivate and inspire the young players we are working with. It was a great moment for the Partner Club programme here at Stoke when Peter signed for the club in terms of him being so well known and having been through the Coerver programme as a young player. It is a great motivational tool for us as coaches to use as the players here really look up to him.”

“Since we began working at the club, I have had the chance to work with Peter and I know how hard he works every day which is one of the key traits we are trying to instil in the players here from the youngest age and having a senior player at the club leading by example can only help that process. I think it is also great that Peter really breaks the mould of your typical player of his physical size, he has fantastic technical ability which you do not see very often in players that are as big as him.”

“This ability with the ball was no more evident than the wonder goal he scored against Manchester City last season (see below image) where he controlled an aerial ball with one touch and then hit a diagonal volley past Joe Hart from 25 yards out, in my opinion this was one of the best “technique” goals that has ever been scored in the Premier League to date.”

Stoke Manager Tony Pulis commented after the game “Crouchy’s goal was fantastic, he does that in training, it is not a one-off, technically he is a very gifted young lad. I thought he was fantastic today, the best player on the pitch. He led us really with his spirit, attitude and commitment, never mind his technical ability.”

Scott added ”The quality of that touch and shot was incredible and it was great to hear the manager’s comments after the game which reinforce why Peter is such a good role model for our academy players coming through. It is also great to hear that Peter feels the Coerver work he did as a young player has given him the technical foundation that he has built his game upon. He has had a very good start to the season so far and hopefully he can continue this run of form and help the club to record their highest finish in the Premier League to date as well as breaking back into the England squad”.
